Supplanted by Troy Aikman, ex-Dolphins QB Brian Griese reportedly leaves ESPN to be 49ers quarterbacks coach

Multiple reports stated that Brian Griese, the son of Miami Dolphins Hall of Fame quarterback Bob Griese and himself a former quarterback for the franchise, has left ESPN and joined the San Francisco 49ers as their quarterbacks coach.

The news comes on the heels of the news that ESPN has hired Troy Aikman to replace Griese (and Louis Riddick) as its broadcast analyst for the Monday Night Football package.

Griese, whose father won two Super Bowls with Miami in the early 1970s, was the Dolphins quarterback for the 2003 season.

ESPN reported coach Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers have hired Griese to replace Rich Scangarello, who left to become the offensive coordinator for the University of Kentucky.

Griese has a long relationship with the Shanahan family. Griese played for Mike Shanahan in Denver his first five years in the NFL. Then, in 2004-05, Griese was Tampa Bay’s quarterback while Kyle Shanahan was an assistant on Jon Gruden’s staff.

Griese has never coached on any level and had been with ESPN for 13 years.
