Liz Gollin made the most of her first year coaching girls’ softball at Loggers’ Run Middle School in Boca Raton.
The Lumberjacks recently finished the season going 12-1 with the lone loss coming to Jupiter Middle School in the championship game at South County Regional Park in Boca Raton. It was just their second trip to the finals, the other came in 2012. They are still chasing their first county title.
In addition to this season, Loggers’ Run also won division titles in 2001, 2004, 2016, 2021 and 2022.
“I was not nervous going into the year,” Gollin said. “I knew I had a very supportive athletic director going in and I got super lucky with an awesome, hardworking group of girls with great personalities. It was lots of fun!”
Last season, Gollin coached at nearby Omni Middle School, and she has also been coaching for Boca Impact Travel 12U and 14U for about two years.
“I knew I had a competitive group,” Gollin said. “My goal for them was to take one game at a time and earn each win. I did believe if they continued working hard and correcting little mistakes they definitely could make it as far as they did.”
Gollin said the play from eighth grader Teagan O’Neill, seventh grader Bailey Rogers and sixth grader Luana Dominguez was outstanding.
“My players worked very well together,” Gollin said. “Their communication on the field was unmatchable and very consistent, which made it more comfortable for them to play with one another; it was never quiet.
“They had such positive attitudes, even with an error being made or striking out,” she said. “They had each other’s backs and supported one another. It was really cool to watch them grow from game one and support each other as a team.”
